In this paper I discuss several possibile analysis for constituent order in German. Approaches that assume continuous constituents are compared with an approach that assumes discontinuous constituents.

The number of passive edges that are built by the Verbmobil grammar during the parse of 24,602 utterances from the Verbmobil corpus is compared with the number of passive edges that are produced by the Babel grammar.
