Abstract

This lecture introduces into phrase structure grammars and its extensions as well as various grammatical theories like Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (GPSG), Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG), Categorial Grammar (CG), Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), Construction Grammar (CxG), Tree Adjoining Grammar TAG), and Dependency Grammar.

The main focus is on the treatment of active-passive alternations, local permutation of phrases (aka scrambling) and long distance dependencies.

Apart from addressing the empirical adequacy of the respective theories, it will be examined whether the respective theories are psycholinguistically plausible, that is, whether there are plausible explanations of language acquisition and prosessing phenomena.
